Current prototype

A separate radio module is planned so Hub can connect directly to selected compatible Zigbee, Thread and Bluetooth Low Energy devices. For supported devices, the goal is local control without a separate third-party hub or Home Assistant. The radio hardware, compatibility and safety boundaries are not final.

Control Satellites for external equipment

Future control Satellites are planned for compatible equipment such as extractor and ventilation fans. The plan is for Hub to manage them on the local network, with Link adding remote monitoring and control through Hub. Supported interfaces, safety rules and automation are not final.

Aura AQ Link

A wider picture when you want it.

Link already supplies the prototype with outdoor context. It is being built to add Hub remote monitoring, phone notifications, hosted history and reports. Remote control through Hub is planned for selected compatible Zigbee, Thread and Bluetooth Low Energy devices, as well as future Aura control Satellites. The service brings together outdoor observations, forecasts, regional models and hazard context, and uses them in warnings and ventilation recommendations.

These sources do different jobs. Local observations, forecasts and regional signals stay distinct, so a broad model signal is not presented as a confirmed reading at your home.

Link will be a paid service, with pricing intended to stay low. Running, maintaining and continually updating this architecture carries ongoing costs. The Link page will be updated as features, pricing and public access are confirmed.

Local control and security

What stays local, and what still needs testing.

The current architecture keeps core monitoring local and uses an outbound HTTPS connection when Link is enabled. Pairing, update delivery and remote access and control still need further implementation, review and testing before release.

Why I decided to build Aura AQ Hub

A local home for the Aura network.

I started thinking about Hub after reading your requests for screenless Aura Satellites. Those Satellites need a practical local centre for people who do not want to build a Home Assistant setup or depend on another system.

My first idea was a Raspberry Pi running Home Assistant. Looking deeper, it added cost, setup work and support complexity. It would also duplicate the excellent Home Assistant servers many Aura users already run.

I chose to build a focused local Aura device. Its purpose is to bring Aura AQ, future Satellites and useful guidance into one clear interface, with optional connections to Aura AQ Link and an existing Home Assistant installation.

The project is still early enough for the hardware, interface and features to change. I am sharing the working prototype now because your feedback can still shape what Aura AQ Hub becomes.

What is confirmed today.

Can I buy Aura AQ Hub now?

No. Hub is a working prototype in early development. There is no final enclosure, hardware target, release date or price yet.

Does Hub require Aura AQ Link or an internet connection?

Hub and connected Aura devices need access to the same local Wi-Fi network. That network can work without internet for core room monitoring. Aura AQ Link is optional, but its outdoor context and remote features need internet.

Will Hub control external devices?

That is planned, not available today. A separate radio module is intended to connect selected compatible Zigbee, Thread and Bluetooth Low Energy devices directly to Hub. Future Aura control Satellites are a second planned path for equipment such as extractor and ventilation fans. Hub would manage supported devices locally, while optional Link would add remote control when internet is available. Supported devices, protocol roles, automation and safety boundaries are not final.

Is 20 the maximum number of Aura devices?

No. Twenty is the number of real Aura devices used in one prototype test, not a published capacity limit. Longer full-load testing is still ahead.

Is local microSD history working today?

Not yet as a validated hardware feature. Local microSD history is planned, but it has not been tested on the physical prototype.

Will Hub replace Home Assistant?

No. Hub is being built to handle the Aura experience and control selected supported devices without Home Assistant. People who already use Home Assistant are intended to be able to export Aura data to it, but that integration is still at an early stage.

Is the hardware shown in the photo final?

No. The current prototype is a bare 7-inch display platform and has no Hub enclosure. The display platform, electronics, interface and feature set may all change.
